Pinot gris /pinot grigio is usually delicately fragrant and mildly floral with lightly lemon-citrus flavors. Depending upon ripeness at harvest and vinification technique, pinot gris can be tangy and light, or quite rich, round and full bodied.

WineIntro.com says that

Pinot grigio pairs well with light dishes that are still on the "thick" side, like chicken in a rich white sauce, or eggplant with heavy spices.

PinotGris.net says of the wine:

Often described as having a floral, smoky, honey-tinged flavor with a minor citrus kick, pinot gris wine is a dry, crisp white wine often high in acidity and low in tannins. Pinot gris should be consumed within two years of its vintage, and pairs well with seafood, pork and chicken, if served sans acidic embellishments.

In 2007, the New York Times said:

Oregon pinot gris can be a wine of character and interest. The good ones have aromas and flavors of flowers, almonds and minerals. They have grace and texture, and are lively enough to go well with food. Best of all, they almost always cost less than $20.

A major component of a wedding reception feast is certainly wine. However, wine is not the only beverage that would be required to please your guests and let them have a good time. Your reception all depends on how you treat your guests with food and drinks in tandem with your overall theme.

If you're wondering which champagnes and wines are best to serve during wedding receptions, you're not alone. Most couples want to find universally delicious wines to pour for their guests, and something to please them as well. You should consider both those wine savvy friends and your oaky-Chardonnay sipping mothers. And of course champagne will need to be poured; you practically can't celebrate without these days!

Here are a few basics that you'll need to know to get the perfect variety for wedding receptions. At most parties, approximately half of the guests will drink white wine, Chardonnay is the most popular, and slightly more will drink red wine. So you'll want to consider your guests. Are there more women? They are more often white wine drinkers, and more male guests mean more red wine. And for those same men, you might even consider having beer to serve as well. You'll also want to consider what food you are serving. If you're serving seafood, think beyond Chardonnay and look into a crisp Pinot Grigio or Sauvignon Blanc. Both also pair nicely with cheese platters, spicy tapas, creamy pasta and chicken entrees. You might even look into a lovely dry Rosé to pour for guests. Not only is it a pretty shade of pink in your glass, but your wine expert friends will be impressed in your taste in wines. For red wines, Merlot and Cabernet are the most popular options for wedding receptions and both work perfectly with hearty red meats or pastas with robust red sauces. If you'd prefer something a bit lighter, look into an earthy Pinot Noir and you might even catch your new mother-in-law branching out and trying a glass.

Wine is great for wedding receptions as it brings an element of class to your celebration as it has been served to celebrate couples since marriage was invented! Many couples today even choose to have their wedding receptions at wineries. Picture an intimate ceremony in a sun-kissed vineyard with an elegant dinner served in a wine cave in Napa. Regardless of your location, don't overlook the importance of choosing wine for your wedding. And you should plan to have a bottle of red and a bottle of white on each table and about two glasses of Champagne per guest. Since wines can get a bit pricey, you might consider going to the winery to taste the wines first. They will often give you a case discount which can be gentler on your bank account. Vineyard wedding colors

Kristen Marquette has written a column for eHow about choosing the colors for your vineyard wedding. Whether you want to choose one of the subtle shades of a red or white wine - don't be afraid to stand out in a red wedding dress! Or you might prefer an earth tone or a green to complement the scenery, or choose a purple to match the ripening grapes. Consider also the season that your wedding will be held - the greens may be most appropriate early in the spring or early summer, and the purples reserved for fall just before the grape harvest.

Try to apply your chosen color scheme to the whole wedding, starting with the invitation cards and all the other stationery that you might use, even perhaps a custom wine label. Carry it through to dress of the wedding party, the flowers and other decorations. This does not mean using just the one color everywhere, but try to keep a strong theme, and choose a complementary color or two to use tastefully alongside it in small splashes.

As well as color, you might like to use a motif throughout your wedding. Your should perhaps also consider the style of the vineyard you chose. Some are very sophisticated, while others lend themselves to a more rustic ambience. It would probably be unwise to work against the surroundings you are in.

Designing a theme for your wedding

Style Me Pretty recently reported on a stunning design theme based on black and white, and a butterfly motif. The butterfly turns up everywhere, as mobiles above the tables, on a wall as a substitute guest book, and in floral displays. The black and white theme is used throughout; the bridal gown was white with black accessories, the cake white with black accents, the place settings white china with black glasses and napkins. Even the invitations were black with white lettering. Other motifs used to a lesser extent included trees and deer.

For a wine themed wedding, one could take a similar approach, perhaps using vine leaves or bunches of grapes as motifs.

"Trash the Dress" at a winery!

Sometimes trends pass me by as I work away at my studio in rural Nova Scotia making wedding favors. One such trend is Trash the Dress.

According to Wikipedia, Trash the Dress may have its roots in the 1998 film Sunset Beach, in which a bride runs into the ocean wearing her gown, but the style of wedding photography, which contrasts elegant clothing with a less than elegant environment, was started in 2001 by John Michael Cooper. Trash the dress photography is often done as an additional shoot after the wedding, and may be a symbolic statement that the wedding and all that is associated with it is over.

Ben Pancoast, a Michigan photographer, did a trash the dress photo session at the Round Barn Winery last fall. Ben says there is no need to trash the dress, and quite often the dress is fine, the idea of the session is often simply to take pictures you didn't have time for on the wedding day. Ben has done several other trash the dress sessions. Check them out!

On the other hand, Reese went all the way and had a fine time trashing her dress.

The photographer of Reese’s trash the dress session was Meghan Aileen from Franklin, Tennessee. Meghan travels for wedding shoots and this one was at Joseph Filippi Winery & Vineyards in California. She too has done other trash the dress shoots.

Do you ever get the feeling that there is too much of a standard recipe for weddings? And that deviation from the norm will not go down well?

When Alyssa & Brian got married, their wedding day had quite a different look. The bride wore a black dress and tattoos. The wedding party dressed in black and grey. Yet they still created an event that was very much a wedding rather than a halloween party. The catering included a vegan Mexican buffet and vegan cupcakes.

The wedding took place at Alexander Valley Hall, set among the vineyards of Alexander Valley, in northeastern Sonoma County, just north of San Francisco.

The other winery in Delaware

When Jess was searching for a vineyard in Delaware to host her wedding, the only one she could find online was beyond her budget. But then she heard on the grapevine of another winery. One that doesn't seem to have a web presence.

Pizzadili Winery is run by Tony and Pete Pizzadili, who grew up in Italy in the early 50's. Their father made wine for a living, so when the family came to the states in 1956 they continued making wine in their backyard. In 1992 they purchased 100 acres of farmland and started planting grapes. When their production reached the legal 200-gallon limit, they decided to turn their hobby into a business, and started work on buildings and permits in 2004. Pizzadili Winery opened in October 2007. They hosted their first wedding in 2006. They are sole providers of catering and wine for the events. Christy and Joel got married at Pizzadili's in 2008 and said:

We could not have asked for a more perfect day! Our wedding was great! Getting married at Pizzadili's Winery in Felton, DE was really fun, low key, romantic, beautiful, PERFECT!

Red wine, red wedding dress?

Since the start of the recession in 2007, it has become chic to drink cheaper wines. There has been a flood of cheap imports to the US, and local wineries are offering deep discounts. One wine that previously retailed for $15 can now be found at $5.99. Wineries are finding it hard to get bank loans, and vineyards are receiving less for their grapes. Some wineries are on the market, and their value has fallen by 20% - 50%. The only good news seems to be that US wine consumption is still increasing.

Wine country is one of the most romantic places you can choose for a wedding. The natural beauty of a vineyard makes a stunning backdrop for a ceremony and reception. There are fantastic vineyards in places like California, Italy, France, and even upstate New York. The best part of course is enjoying the top wines that the vineyard has to offer.

When hosting your wedding in a location with its' own unique beauty, play up the elements that make the place special. So at a vineyard, choose natural decorations, displayed in non-fussy ways. Incorporate details like grapevines, trailing greenery, and fruit into your table décor and perhaps over an arbor for the ceremony. Rough hewn, simple containers made from wood, galvanized metals, or hollowed out vegetables would make wonderful vessels. Use elements that emphasize the bounty of the land.

The bride and groom should think about the setting when choosing their attire. Instead of a heavy satin gown and a tuxedo, consider sophisticated but less glitzy styles. The groom at a vineyard wedding would look great in either a suit (a tan linen one would be smashing for a summer wedding), or a blazer and trousers. The bride should look for a gown with simple lines, like an A-line or a sheath. A gown with texture, such as all-over lace, would look incredible in the naturally beautiful setting of wine country.

For the finishing touches, the bride should also look for accessories and a hairstyle that are not too fussy or stiff. Soft waves in her hair, held back by a handmade pearl comb would be sophisticated and simple. Handcrafted bridal jewelry is the perfect accent for a rustic reception. Think about keshi or baroque pearls, intertwined with strands of sterling silver. Soft movement always looks right in an outdoor locale, so look for handcrafted bridal jewelry like drop earrings and cluster necklaces.

After the bride, the wine itself is the star of the show at a vineyard wedding. Feature the vineyard's finest vintages, with information about each on the menu cards. A flight of wines, with an appropriate selection served with each course, would be a delightful way to highlight the best of the vineyard's offerings . Pair the wine with seasonal local cuisine, and you will really have a reception that is enjoyable and memorable for you and your guests. (Just be sure to provide transportation home for everyone!)

Wine Country Weddings On the California Central Coast

A wine country wedding conjures up images of colorful vineyards, earthy scents and romantically lit wine cellars. You need little in the way of decoration, as the setting is so naturally scenic. While most vineyards look similar, depending on the season and age of the vines, the winery buildings themselves can vary widely. Decide if you prefer the style of a country farmhouse, a French chateau or a simple stone building.
Another consideration is the winery's proximity to an airport and/or accommodations for out of area guests. Many wineries offer outdoor receptions overlooking the vineyard, perhaps with hors d'hoevres passed in an elegant tasting room. Some have wine cellars and barrel rooms that can be set up with candles in medieval style for the wedding dinner. A combination or variation of these can be incorporated, making the most use of the winery's natural attributes.

Another great thing about having a wine country wedding is that you really don't need much in the way of extra decorating costs. Plus, the gorgeous setting will enhance your wedding photos.
Popular wine tasting areas on the California Central Coast include Paso Robles, the Edna Valley near San Luis Obispo and the Santa Maria and Arroyo Grande areas. Not every winery offers wedding services, but the following places do. Call and inquire about their offerings, and then take a tour with your fiancé of the ones you are interested in. Be sure to taste their wines as well!

Using vintage wine bottle labels in your decor and stationery

A good source of inspiration for graphics to use in your vineyard wedding are old wine bottle labels. You can find lots of examples with Google's image search, and winegirl.ch has many labels organized by subject, such as these examples of Feminine Beauty Art Nouveau.

Obviously one must take care not to infringe any copyrights when using materials like this, but if you use really old labels where the copyright has expired you should be ok.

A label like the one shown here, could be photo-shopped to remove the text, new background air brushed in its place, then your own text added using similar fonts, color and texture. It would make a great invitation and set the scene for a truly special day.

A Photographer's Look at the Temecula Wedding Location Wilson Creek Winery

Although it is the photographer who has the greatest influence in the creation of an excellent photographic wedding collection, the location also has a dramatic impact. A wedding at Wilson Creek Winery in Temecula is a beautiful location for shooting a wedding and if shot correctly will contribute to a memorable wedding album.

The Vineyards are of course the attribute that sets this wedding location apart from other wedding location. When shooting in this location a photographer should use the natural, earthy, fresh backgrounds that this location permits. When shooting the actual ceremony, a photographer can get a variety of stunning shots by standing at the back of the ceremony location. Those in attendance sit in rows of chairs at the same level as where the ceremony takes place. The photographer, from behind those in attendance can climb to a higher point. From this point of view, a photographer can get a shot of the entire ceremony with miles of rolling vine covered hills in the background. Of course a photographer needs to get close-up shots as well. Both objectives can be accomplished if one photographer shoots from the back with both a wide angle and a telephoto lens and another assistant is placed under the white gazebo where there the ceremony takes place.

One great place to take pictures of the bride is at the top of a couple flights of stairs of the lobby. There is a 19th century style black railing that goes around the hallway of the top floor of the lobby. A black and white or sepia shot of the bride against this railing creates an attractive retro look that will work well in a number of styles of albums.

Another location which is fun to shoot in is within the vineyards themselves. A picture the bride and groom framed with branches and grapes in the foreground with the couple centered between the branches in the background so that it looks as though the camera is peeking in on them as they gaze into each others eyes is another favorite shot available at this location.

Temecula has a number of beautiful locations for shooting a wedding. The Wilson Creek Winery if shot correctly will contribute much to any wedding album.

From the moment you get engaged, to thanking guests for their gifts, there are many times that you will need to send out notes to all your guests. These might include engagement announcements and parties, save the date magnets, wedding invitations, guest information cards, bridal showers and thank you notes.

There are many places where you can get these printed using off-the-shelf designs, but if you are at all creative and can use photo editing software, why not make your own personal designs and get those printed? This gives you the ability to maintain the vineyard theme in all your communications.

You can buy stock photographs quite cheaply at websites like istockphoto.com.You can search for photos on related subjects, and add your text before sending the file to printers such as vistaprint.com. Here is an example I knocked up in just a few minutes.

Wine making at South River Vineyard

Just to get you in the mood for wine, here is a nice little video of wine making at South River Vineyard in Geneva, Ohio. The winery is housed in a century-old Chapel that was first built in 1892, and moved to its present location in 2000. The first couple exchanged vows at the restored altar in May 2002.
